You don’t get many challenges bigger than Save the Rainforest.
When Jonathan Wild asked Host to develop a concept for saving a slice of rainforest the size of Yorkshire he didn’t expect the answer he got. If you want to save a slice of Rainforest the size of Yorkshire you’re going to have to save the whole lot. Why? Because it’s 50% gone already, being logged at about 13million hectares per annum, and fast approaching its tipping point – the point at which the Rainforest can no longer support itself or produce the weather systems that support us all. So, Jonathan faced with one of those all or nothing decisions, and being the guy he is, went for the let’s save the lot option.
The Rainforest is the world’s largest single single source of carbon emissions, bigger than US emissions, bigger than the entire transport sector, contributing 20% of global carbon emissions every year through deforestation (50% gone already, 13million hectares logged every year).
Climate Change and what to do about it is the biggest single issue facing business, bigger and more long-term than the recession, more destructive than any local issue. Governments and policy makers are moving too slowly. Business is the solution.
The United Bank of Carbon, UBoC, is a very big idea, big enough to save the Rainforest and provide sustainable livelihoods for all those who live in it. In fact it’s a bit more than a big idea as it now a global initiative backed by Deloitte, Rainforest Alliance, Ecosecurities and all of the world’s leading Rainforest-facing NGOs. UBoC will raise the value of the Rainforest by turning it into the World’s largest carbon bank, realising its carbon value, building local sustainable economies across the globe and putting a stop to deforestation. It’s a 10 year plan.
